Teresa’s Tips: Unlocking the Ultimate Vacation Funhouse, Come Rain or Shine!

By Teresa Purchase, Co-founder & Head of Operations

Hello there! I’m Teresa Purchase, the Co-Founder and Head of Operations at Grey Bruce Cottages, and let me take you on a little journey into transforming your vacation rental into the ultimate haven of enjoyment and laughter. Picture this: It’s a typical day in paradise, but oh no, the rain decides to join the party. Fear not, for I have conjured up a magical list of indoor and outdoor activities that will have your guests forgetting about the dreary weather and basking in the joy of good, old-fashioned fun.

Indoor Escapades: A Rainy Day’s Best Friend

First up, we have the classics: Chess and Checkers. Because nothing says ‘vacation fun’ like a silent battle of wits, right? And let’s not overlook the mighty Deck of Cards – with these in hand, who needs sunshine? For the kids (and let’s be honest, the young at heart), Crazy 8’s and Old Maid are the champions of laughter and possibly mild family feuds.

Moving on to the thinkers of the group, Crossword Puzzles and Word Searches are here to keep your brains buzzing. For the more physically inclined, games like Scrabble, Twister, and Jenga promise to test your vocabulary, flexibility, and patience in one fell swoop. And puzzles! Ah, the sweet satisfaction of not having to look for that missing piece because I wisely suggest puzzles that don’t have a gazillion pieces.

Now, while I could hop on Amazon.ca and tell you about the top-selling indoor games, let’s just say that classics like Battleship, UNO, and Operation are always a hit. Imagine the excitement as you “operate” on a patient or scream “UNO!” at the top of your lungs. Pure, unadulterated fun.

A quick pro tip: avoid games that are the equivalent of a part-time job for your cleaner to sort. And anything that can make your walls resemble a Jackson Pollock painting (I’m looking at you, dart boards and markers), might not be your best bet.

Outdoor Shenanigans: Because Vitamin D is Important

When the sun graces us with its presence, it’s time to unleash the outdoor arsenal. We’re talking Badminton Nets, Volleyball, and for those who dare, Lawn Darts (just kidding, safety first!). Fancy a round of Croquet or Bocce Ball? It’s like the Olympics, but with less training and more laughter.

And for the water enthusiasts, kayaks and canoes with a side serving of lifejackets and safety kits because, well, safety is no joke (even if we like to have a laugh).

Arcade Nostalgia at The Mallory

Now, let’s talk about a hidden gem in “The Mallory,” one of the cherished vacation spots we manage in Mallory Beach, South Bruce Peninsula. Here’s a fun fact: the arcade corner is a team favourite, and trust me, it’s easy to see why! Imagine stepping into the game room and being greeted by the nostalgic hum of an arcade machine – it’s like being whisked back to the golden days of gaming, but with a modern twist. This isn’t just any game room; it’s a portal to the past where Pac-Man reigns supreme, and high scores are the currency of champions. It’s the perfect blend of retro and comfort, and it’s waiting for you to challenge your friends or family to a friendly showdown. Who needs a time machine when you have “The Mallory’s” arcade corner to take you back to the good old days?

Reserve at The Mallory to see what all the fun is about. Reserve here.

A Little Tech Never Hurt Anybody (PS5 anyone?)

Now, in an era where screens are more common than actual face-to-face conversations, I say let’s mix it up. A DVD player with a stash of movies is like a treasure chest for those rare moments when the outdoors or a board game just won’t cut it. It’s about balance, my friends. Why not go retro? The younger folk absolutely LOVE watching old VHS on the cottage VHS player

For the teen or the ‘gamer’ in the family, having a PlayStation or Nintendo Wii can save marriages and family relationships with next of kin. They can be a fantastic addition, especially for families or groups that enjoy gaming. It offers a great indoor activity for rainy days or quiet evenings. However, make sure you are monitoring usage and keep locked away in between bookings.

So there you have it, folks. Follow my guide, and your vacation rental will be the talk of the town and a beacon of joy and shared memories. Remember, it’s not just about the place; it’s about the experiences you create. And maybe, just maybe, we can make the sun a little jealous of all the fun we’re having inside (or outside, weather permitting).
